I run the new Digital Hub in Peregian Beach - an investment by Noosa Council to accelerate the growth of the digital sector in Noosa and contribute to a more diversified and resilient local economy.
There are hundreds of businesses designing, making or sourcing products in Noosa and selling them to the world. With over 4.5bn people transacting online today, we think export e-commerce is a major opportunity to grow our digital sector.
To help make that happen, we’re reaching out to our Noosa-based eCommerce businesses to see whether they would like to be part of an industry group along the lines of the groups we now have in place for technologists, digital marketers, screen professionals and dj/producers.
Let me illustrate what this group might look like by using the example of the digital marketers group, called REBOOT Noosa. This is an industry group, formed at the beginning of the year which now has over 160 members. The purpose of the group is to organise, inspire and up-skill the digital creative community in Noosa to grow the profile of the digital marketing sector and attract opportunities for local service providers.
The group gathers on the 2nd Tuesday of each month at the Peregian Digital Hub for a fantastic meetup event which has been expertly curated by the leaders of the group. Meetups start with 30mins of networking over sponsored gourmet pizza and beer/wine before we head indoors for presentations from 3 top notch industry professionals.
Presenters are curated to be a mix of inspirational and up-skilling - sharing best practices, case studies and practical tips to help members innovate their offerings, life their scale of ambition and take advantage of new techniques or technologies.
Beyond the monthly meetups, the REBOOT is creating an industry directory, talent development program and job board. We also think there is an opportunity to host a national industry event in Noosa to put the local industry on the map.
We envisage the eCommerce group functioning along similar lines. As with digital marketing, ecommerce has become complex. Consider distribution: from the Amazon marketplace to Etsy to hosted ecommerce platforms, to Wechat to Taobao, there are umpteen distribution channels, each of which is unique and requires serious expertise. That’s before we’ve got to sourcing, logistics, contract manufacturing, drop-shipping, warehousing, crm, marketing, merchandising, payment processing and so on.
In short, we think it could be valuable to create an eCommerce group for sharing, collaborating and up-skilling our local industry. However, we wanted to check in and see whether you agreed.
